Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup 1 stick salted butter
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Place the stick of butter in an 8×8 inch square baking dish or 9-inch round cake pan and put it in the preheating oven until completely melted, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. While butter melts, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl.
  4. Create a well in the center of your dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Using a wooden spoon or rubber spatula, gently stir until just combined.
  5. Remove the baking dish with melted butter from the oven. Transfer your wet biscuit dough to the butter-filled baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Use a knife to score the dough into 9 equal squares.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is beautifully golden brown.
  8. Remove from oven and allow to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a homemade buttermilk substitute, add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar or lemon juice to 2 cups of regular milk and let stand for 5 minutes. You can customize these biscuits by adding herbs, cheese, or spices to the dry ingredients.
